Climbing


UMD is a great place to climb indoors and outdoors. Duluth is located near some of the most beautiful, natural rock climbing areas in the Midwest. Explore these areas with us and take advantage of our fantastic indoor climbing facilities. All sessions include climbing equipment and instruction. Join us for the fun! Your first climbing session is free for UMD students! Bring your U Card to the RSOP office for your free pass.

Climbing Programs
Group Sessions

North Shore Wall

The North Shore Wall has a prominent place in the Sports and Health Center and extends through two stories into a skylight. Features include top rope climbing, lead-climbing routes, simulated ice climbing, dry tooling routes, realistic hand cracks and flake systems, a rappel ledge and a great bouldering area.

Inland Wall

The Inland Wall, adjacent to the ice rink/tennis courts has realistic features including cracks, flakes and ledges. It also has a large and fun Bouldering Cave. The inland wall is open for group reservations, North Shore Climbers Club on Tuesdays 6–9 pm and during Open Climbing Hours upon request.

Monday–Thursday 4–8 pm
Friday & Saturday 3:00–5:45 pm

*Climbing hours are subject to change. Please call ahead for current hours. Open climbing hours are from January 23 - May 5. The Climbing Walls will be closed for Spring Break, March 9-18 and CWI course March 30-April 1.

Prices

Prices include harnesses, ropes, belay devices, carabiners, instruction and shoes.

Session Pass:

$3 UMD Students/ $10 Others

5-Punch Pass:

$10 UMD Students/ $30 Others

Semester Pass (includes shoes):

$30 UMD Students/ $80 Others

Year Pass (includes shoes):

$50 UMD Students/ $150 Others

First Week Free!!

Climbing is FREE during the first week of Open Climbing Hours, January 23- 28. Make your way down to the North Shore Wall in the Fitness Center between 4–8 pm Monday-Thursday. Climbing instructors will be on hand to help you get started. All equipment use is free.

Free Bouldering

Bouldering is climbing low enough to the ground that ropes are not needed for safety. It's a great way to cross train for any sport and can enhance core strength, balance and coordination. Plus it's fun! Anyone with a facility or climbing pass is welcome to boulder for free during Fitness Bouldering hours. Be sure to keep your feet below the four-foot high mark.

Monday - Thursday 6:00 am - 4:00 pm
Friday 6:00 am - 3:00 pm
Saturday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Sunday Noon - 8:00 pm

Note: anyone bouldering during scheduled Open Climbing Hours must have a pass.

Group Climbing Sessions

Set up your own date and time for a group of up to 15 people. Goals include exploring teamwork, group communication, trust or just having fun. Reservation times are based on availability. Call (218) 726- 6257 two weeks in advance to schedule your group session. Includes all gear and instruction.
Cost: $80 per hour (per group of up to 15 people)/$50 UMD student groups

Climbing Birthday Parties

Active fun for kids ages 7 and up! Parties include private use of the Inland Wall, instruction, equipment and treats hidden on the wall for climbers to find. Call (218) 726-6257 two weeks in advance to schedule your climbing birthday party. Cost: $85 per hour (per group of up to 12 people). Includes all gear and instruction.
