Instructor Certification Courses Spring 2010

PCIA Instructor Certification
This year we are pleased to offer our certification courses through the Professional Climbing Instructors’ Association. The PCIA is a nationally-recognized training organization dedicated to improving the safety, quality and delivery of technical climbing instruction. PCIA certification courses are ideally suited for top rope instructors who work at camps or schools in our region or in climbing instructional settings around the world. PCIA Base Managed Climbing Instructor Course
The thirty-hour (3 day) course builds upon the
existing skills of competent recreational climbers
taking an in depth look at site selection, equipment,
knot selection, anchor building, rope systems,
Leave No Trace practices, rescue and assistance
skills as well as key instructional skills. Participants
are considered PCIA Assistant Instructors upon
completion of the course.

Base Managed Certification Exam
Those seeking certifi cation must pass this one-day
fi eld exam and written test. A skill consolidation
period following the Instructor Course is
recommended but not required.

PCIA Top Managed Climbing Instructor Course and Exam
This one-day, 10-hour addition to the Base Managed
Climbing Instructor Course is designed for those
who work in settings, like sea cliff s, at which the
belayers are at the top of the cliff . Skills include
managing top belays, rescue and raising systems,
belay escapes and cliff top safety. Meet: TBA

PCIA Single Pitch Instructor Endorsement
This endorsement is taught concurrently with the
Base and Top Managed Climbing Courses. Certifi ed
instructors must complete a demonstration lead
climb to receive this endorsement.

Climbing Instructor Courses Summer 2010

3-Day Top Rope Instructor Training Course
This course is taught by PCIA certified instructors and is designed to help
prepare a recreational climber for his or her role as a professional outdoor
top rope instructor. Topics include placing and evaluating rock
protection, building top rope anchors, rescue practice with raising and lowering injured climbers, risk management, group management, teaching techniques and safety.

2-Day Top Rope Instructor Skills Update
You’ve worked with groups in an outdoor setting as a top rope instructor in the past. This course will help you refresh your skills, practice rescues and update you knowledge of equipment use and risk management. Course instructors are PCIA certified.

1-Day Climbing Rescue Course
Join a PCIA certified instructor to practice the skills needed to raise or lower an injured or frightened climber to safety. This one-day course will emphasize technical rigging of anchors and rope work. Previous
experience in outdoor climbing and building anchors is required.
