Fall 2007 Activities
Water is everywhere and
we aim to explore it in kayaks and canoes! Outings provide you an opportunity
to learn and discover the rivers and lakes in our region or practice
new found skills with experienced leaders. The pool provides you the
opportunity to learn in a warm and safe environment. Fun is the key
word!

Kayaking in the Pool & Club Membership
Here’s your chance to try kayaking for the fi rst time or get into
the pool and refi ne your skills with knowledgeable instructors
from the UMD Kayak and Canoe Club in a comfortable environment.
The club offers river instruction, sea kayak outings and
special events throughout the year so come on down to a pool
session to learn more. All kayak/canoe events are either free or
discounted for club members. Since kayakers and surfers have
similar wave surfi ng interests one person will often choose to
participate in both sports. Surfboard time is also available

Superior Bay Harbor Tour
This tour begins at our Aquatic Center, Minnesota Avenue, and
explores the mouth of the St. Louis River. We’ll paddle along
the world’s longest freshwater sandbar and circumnavigate
Hearding Island, a sanctuary for herring gulls, terns, cormorants
and other water birds. Experience a working harbor as we
paddle alongside visiting ships from around the world enroute
to the William A. Irvin, a docked 700 foot ore boat. And if the
conditions are right, feel Lake Superior swells slip beneath your
boat as we paddle past the Aerial Lift Bridge.

Kayak at Glensheen Estate
Do you like to kayak or would you like to try it out? What about
the Glensheen Estate, ever been there? Want to go again? How
about combine both together and go for a day trip. We will drive
to Glensheen and take a tour of the grounds and have lunch
along the Tischer Creek. After lunch, we’ll hop in our kayaks
and paddle through the Aerial Lift Bridge on our way back to
the UMD Aquatic Center.

Paddling the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
We’ll load up our Duluth packs and paddle through the majestic
lakes of the BWCA. Explore the beauty and wonder of this
pristine wilderness with experienced and enthusiastic leaders.
Stargazing, stories, and listening for hooting owls and howling
wolves are included on this trip’s itinerary. Beautiful fall colors,
few people, and no bugs will make this a special trip. No experience
required.
Depart: Friday, September 14 2pm
Return: Sunday, September 16 6pm

Halloween Paddle
Come canoe with us to experience fall’s changing colors and
perhaps a ghost or two. Eeeks! The deep bays and dark forests
of the lower St. Louis River await. We will learn basic canoe
techniques and water safety and then head out on the river for a
great day of fun and paddling.

REEL International Film Festival
This is an International Film Festival on world tour produced
by Rapid Media of Canada representing all paddling disciplines.
Prize drawings held at 10pm.
