Spring 2009 Activities

Water is everywhere and we aim to explore it in kayaks and canoes! Outings provide you an opportunity to learn and discover the rivers and lakes in our region or practice new found skills with experienced leaders. The pool provides you the opportunity to learn in a warm and safe environment. Fun is the key word!

Kayaking in the Pool & Club Membership
Here’s your chance to try kayaking for the first time or get into
the pool and refine your skills with knowledgeable instructors
from the UMD Kayak and Canoe Club in a comfortable environment.
The club offers river instruction, sea kayak outings and
special events throughout the year so come on down to a pool
session to learn more. All kayak/canoe events are either free or
discounted for club members. Surfboard time is also available
during club hours.
Thursdays 9-11pm
We Provide: Kayaks and Gear
You Provide: Swimsuit and Towel
Meet at the UMD Pool
Cost: Your first session is FREE! Thereafter Spring Semester
dues are: $25 UMD Students / $35 Others

Introduction to Paddling Kayak &
Essentials of Kayak Touring
Instructor Certification Workshops

Twenty-four hours of kayak instructor training and assessment
during UMD’s 2009 Spring Semester. You will prepare lessons,
develop your teaching methods, analyze videotape, refine
paddling skills, and meet with the Instructor Trainer Randy
Carlson and Instructor Pat Kohlin.
Mondays, Spring Semester 2009 from 2-4:30pm
February 23, March 2, 9, 23, 30 April 6 with last two
sessions April 13 & 20 held at the UMD Aquatic Center
2-6pm.
Meet: UMD Pool
Cost: $125 UMD Student plus $25 ACA-SEIC Dues. A one year
ACA Membership is paid for by RSOP for all participants.

Carving a Greenland Style Kayak Paddle
Take a 2x4 piece of lumber, some simple shop tools, and a few
hours of labor and you too can add the narrow bladed Greenland
paddle to your collection. Learn the history, the paddlingbenefits,
and the methods used to build your own paddle. The
first 7 people to sign up recieve a cedar blank to take with and
carve on their own.

Seven Registered.

Sea Kayaking Rescues
Here’s your chance to build sea kayak rescue skills that will
work in rough water conditions, right here in our pool. You
will practice rescue prevention, move into
self-rescues (paddle float) and assisted rescues using the triedand-
true T-rescue. We will even show you techniques if you are
having trouble getting back into your boat.

Kayak/Canoe/Stand-Up Paddle Board
the St. Louis River

Have you ever wanted to experience the thrill of white water
paddling? The rush of the wild river pushing you along and the
spray of cold water in your face. Well you don’t have to go far.
The Outdoor Program will be taking a trip to the St Louis River
after the spring thaw. It’s going to be an all day adventure with
skills development as we explore flat water, moving water and
whitewater spots on the river.

Swift Water Rescue
Learn how to prepare for and react to swift water rescue situations.
Classroom and hands-on learning focuses on equipment,
rope skills, self and assisted-rescues that are done from in or
out of the boat. The final day is dedicated to handling on-river
rescue scenarios in groups. Paddlers must be comfortable paddling
a kayak or canoe in at least Class II whitewater.
May 23-25 9am-4pm
