Ever wondered what it feels like to lead a group along a wooded trail under the moonlight?
Or have you wanted to share your love of kayaking, trail running or your knack for crafts
with others? Then become a part of the Outdoor Program staff and develop the skills
to become a leader in education through participation in a fun environment. Meetings
focus on developing skills, having fun, exploring—and sometimes free food! Show up
and you can be involved! Meet at UMD Bagley Nature Area’s Rock Pond (unless otherwise

Walking With Your Hand
Have you ever been hiking through the
woods and were in need of a walking stick?
You saw one that someone else had made
and you wanted one just like it? Now is your
chance to make your very own Diamond
Willow walking stick. Learn how to find a
Diamond Willow tree, how to hand carve
a walking stick, and get a start on carving
your very own. Tools and sticks provided.
Bring your own carving knife if you have
one.

Introduction to Nordic Skiing
(Skate and Classic technique)
If you have never tried cross-country skiing
in Duluth, you are missing out! Not only is
cross-country skiing rated the world’s best
aerobic fitness activity, but it’s enjoyable
too! This is a great time to learn what style
you prefer and burn some calories while
enjoying winter in Duluth. Choose between
skate skiing or classic skiing. No experience
is necessary, so throw out the excuses andcome try it out for yourself! Bring your own skate or classic skis.

Full Moon Candle Light Ski and Snowshoe
Join us for an evening ski and snowshoe
in our very own Bagley Nature Area. Come
and ski as the full moon and candles light
your way. There will be instructors on
hand to give ski and snowshoeing lessons.
There will be hot chocolate and treats for
everyone to enjoy. Bring your own skis or
snowshoes. (Rentals available see p. 24)

A Foray Into Quinzhees
Here’s your chance to be master of the
house! Come and learn how to build a
snow shelter that is suitable enough to
sleep in and keep you warm in winter. Learn

Quinzhee.

canoe camps, law enforcement, resource
management, government agencies,
environmental education centers, and
research biology centers will be on hand
in the Kirby Student Center Main Hallway
to speak with you about their jobs in the
outdoors.

City of Duluth Bow Hunt
Here’s an informational session for those
of you interested in learning more about
the Duluth’s citywide white-tailed deer
bowhunt. Phillip Lockett, from the
Arrowhead Bowhunters Alliance (who
manages the hunt), will explain the
processes and procedures to get involved
as well as discuss the role the hunt plays in
the ecology of Duluth. It’s not too early to
start planning for fall 2010.

Bowhunter Education Class
This is the Minnesota DNR’s course that is
a requirement to participate in the City of
Duluth bowhunt (plus many other hunts
across Minnesota) and is a great course to
learn more about bowhunting. This course
covers bowhunting techniques, equipment,
safety, and hunter responsibility. This
course will be run by Jay Boberg, a MN DNR
Instructor.

Snowshoe Jay Cooke State Park
The water-eroded gorge of the St. Louis
River valley can be enjoyed in Jay Cooke
State Park all year long. Come and explore
a portion of the ten miles of snowshoe
trails, cross the famous Swinging Bridge,
and admire the view from Oldenburg Point.
We will transport you from UMD to the Jay
Cooke State Park visitor center where we
will give instruction and prepare for the
hike.

Telemark Skiing Night at Mont du Lac
Take your alpine skiing to a new level with
telemark skiing – sort of a blend of nordic
and alpine skiing equipment and skills. This
is a fun outing with some basic instruction
and a lot of opportunity to spend time on
the hill with people that like to telemark.

Did you know both US curling teams that
attended the 2006 winter Olympics were
from Minnesota? Ever wonder what is up
with this sport? Join us for an afternoon
of fun for beginners at the Duluth Curling
Club. You will learn the basics of how to
curl from skilled, certified instructors.

Canoe Paddle Making
The canoeing season is not too far away
and winter is a great time to work on a new
canoe paddle. We’ll explore the different
ways wooden paddles are made (including
bent shaft), then work on making a
laminated, straight shaft paddle. We supply
the wood and glue. First session we will
size and glue up the blade, shaft, and grip.
Second session we will shape and work
on sanding each paddle. You’ll have to do
some work at home, including final sanding
and varnishing.

Extreme Cardboard Sled... Competition!
Attention all inventors! Do you love to sled
in the winter? We’re taking that traditional
winter pastime and giving it a twist! Gather
your team of 2-5 to compete in this creative
and fun challenge. Design a sled and then
race it down the hill in Bagley Nature Area.
Sleds will be judged on farthest distance
and creativity. Pick up your pre-approved
sled construction materials list in the RSOP
office when you register.

Dog Sledding With Epic Sled Dogs
The swoosh of the runner, the bark of the
dogs, and the solitude of the forest await
you on this adventure just outside of Duluth.
You will have the opportunity to learn how
to work with, harness, and hook-up dogs, as
well as learn skills helpful in maneuvering
your sled dog team, then drive the team
through the spectacular winter scenery of
Northern Wisconsin. All of these skills, and
more, will be taught by veterans of the
Iditarod Sled Dog Race and international
dogsled adventures. Join us for this fun
filled winter adventure you will not forget.

North Shore Stream Ski
Pack your sense of adventure and explore
the frozen waterfalls and rapids of a
Northern Minnesota stream on crosscountry
skis. We will introduce frozen river
navigation techniques, while we look for
tracks in the snow and wolf kills sites. This is
a slightly more challenging outing so basic
skills are needed but you don’t have to be
an expert. Come and enjoy the beauty of
the Split Rock River … it doesn’t get much
better than this!

us and we’ll stitch one up, so now you can

Carving a Greenland Style Kayak Paddle
Take a 2x4 piece of lumber, some simple
shop tools, and a few hours of labor and
you too can add the narrow bladed
Greenland paddle to your collection. Learn
the history, the paddling benefits, and the
methods used to build your own paddle.
The first 7 people to sign up receive a cedar
pre-cut plank to take with and carve on
their own.

Outdoor Writers Workshop
Do you ever have the urge to put your
wilderness experiences down on paper?
Maybe the fog and wildlife on an early
morning paddle caught your eye or you
had a memorable battle with a steelhead
that needs more than a picture. This class
will not only help you record the details of
your outdoor journeys, it will also refine the
storytelling techniques and elements of
description that bring these experiences to
life. Come join other writers and storytellers
for this rare opportunity.

Useful Outdoor Knots
A Taut what Line? You have heard the
names and watched others tie them. Here’s
a chance to learn them for yourself. Our
instructors will show you how and when
to use a square knot, bowline, clove, taut
line, and trucker’s hitch. These will help you
with everything from securing a boat to
tightening a tarp. We’ll also introduce you
to a few crazy yet functional new knots.

Trip Planning BWCA and Quetico
This is the year for you to plan a trip to the
BWCAW or the Quetico? Come and discover
the logistics of planning a trip to this
beautiful wilderness area or other canoeing
areas. Topics will include route planning,
meal preparation, water, gear selection and
permits.

Maple Syruping
Join us in UMD’s Bagley Nature Area for
our annual maple syruping program. Learn
syruping history, and how sap is collected
and turned into maple syrup. You will tap
maples, collect sap and sample the sweet
stuff. You also will learn about resources
so you too can make maple syrup. This is a
great time to be in the woods.

Spinner Making Workshop
Join Larry and Ralph Ehresman, custom
tackle makers and owners of L.D.E. Tackle, as
they teach you the skills to make your own
tackle. Spinners, the topic of this session,
will help prepare you for the coming fishing
season. We will make snelled spinners, wire
spinners, and an original LDE Tackle Spin Jig
that you can take home with you and use
on your next fishing trip. You will go home
with at least 3 spinners from this workshop.

Running Form and Injury Prevention
Dr. Adam Sundberg, local chiropractor
specializing in treating athletes, will help
introduce you to proper running form and
injury prevention. Dr. Sundberg will go
through the different aspects of a runner’s
gait and provide tips to increase efficiency
and speed. He will also review exercises
designed to facilitate proper muscle
balance with the goal of avoiding training
injuries.

Educators Conference. This is a great time
to meet other students from the Midwest
who share a passion for the outdoors, as

Spring Bagley Clean Up
Bagley Nature Area needs to be clean after
the long hard winter. In this Spring Clean
Up we will work throughout the UMD

Springtime! Sweet, warm weather, and
biking! Come get some tips and handson

derailleurs as well as a few other things that
make your bike tick.

Seventh Annual Great Camp
Stove Cooking Contest
Demonstrate your cooking skills and win
prizes! Here’s the recipe: Ten teams of 1 or
2 cooks will receive the same ingredients
(basic items typical to a wilderness camping
trip) to transform into a great meal. Our
panel of outdoor food enthusiasts will taste
and judge the results. After the judges
have made their decisions, everyone eats!
No one, other than the event coordinators,
will know the ingredients until the start of
the contest. Each team provides their own
camp stoves (up to 2 burners), cooking kit,
utensils, spices and camp table (optional).
Stoves, cook-kits, utensils and tarps are
available upon request at registration. Fires
will not be allowed due to spring burning
ban. Space is limited so register early.

Basic Auto Mechanics
Ol’ Bessy leakin’ oil like a sieve? One axel
draggin on the ground? Belts making a high
pitched squeal? Radiator making a hissing
sound? Shape that car up and keep it on
the road! Learn basic automotive skills that
you can perform with a few simple tools
while saving money and becoming the
envy of all your mechanic-bound friends.
Get ‘er ready for your summer cross country
road trips and adventures. For the greenminded,
the class will be followed by a 15
minute overview of the production and use
of biodiesel.

Hartley Nature Hike
Hartley Park is a 660-acre oasis of woods,
ponds, and trails. Many students don’t realize
that it’s just a few blocks from campus. On
this relaxing afternoon hike to Hartley, we’ll
hike a few trails and look for signs of the
changing season as winter starts to recede.
This is a great chance to see a bit of what
Hartley has to offer before coming back for
further exploration.

Bored of the same old fishing? Want to try
something new? Have you ever wanted to
get into Fly-Fishing? Well now is your chance
to give it a try. We will teach you about

Duluth. From the basic skills introduction,
we’ll head to a stream to practice and see if
we can catch fish.

recipes, and taste test your hard work.
